New initiative threatens voting rights for thousands — here’s what you need to know
On June 27, the Michigan Board of State Canvassers approved the 100-word summary for a constitutional amendment proposed by Americans for Citizen Voting — also promoted under the name Prove It, Michigan. This approval means circulators can now start collecting signatures to put this initiative on the November 2026 ballot.
If passed, this petition would:
- Require expensive and hard-to-obtain documents (e.g., birth certificates, passports) to register and vote
- Eliminate the affidavit option for voters without ID
- Require a photo ID plus part of your Social Security Number for absentee ballots
- Authorize the Secretary of State to reverify citizenship
- Allow the removal of eligible voters from the rolls over paperwork
- Count only “verified” ballots, potentially discarding valid votes
- Impose up to $1,000 in civil fines and five years in prison for “non-compliant” voters or election workers
Why it matters:
Michigan’s Constitution already guarantees strong voting rights — passed by the people in 2018 & 2022.
This initiative would undo those protections, hitting hardest among returning citizens, low-income communities, seniors, people with disabilities, and first-time voters.
How VAAC is fighting back:
- Hosting community briefings, town halls, and canvasses
- Training ambassadors to talk with voters and monitor circulators
- Partnering across Michigan to debunk disinformation
- Uplifting directly impacted leaders to lead this movement
