VAAC Statewide Jail Voting Work Group

Several weeks ago our Jail Voting Workgroup started to organize and take shape.  The group includes representatives from across the state—both individuals as well as established organizations working together to ensure that voters detained in Michigan jails can exercise their rights to vote.  So far we have:

  • Identified priority “Phase 1” counties where we have already established a foundation for this work: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Genesee.
  • Built a strategy for reaching further across the state.
  • Organized teams to work in specific counties.

The Work is Just Beginning

We’ve created momentum; now it’s time to get to work.  You can still get involved by joining our next meeting on April 9 at 10AM.  We can use additional help either with the Phase 1 counties or with establishing our presence elsewhere in the state.  For example, we are starting to pull together a team to work in Washtenaw County, and there is statewide advocacy work to attend to as well.

No matter where you are located, there’s a space to plug in, and support this work. We will provide guidance, scripts, tools, and coordination to ensure everyone can engage in a meaningful way.

Date: Thursday, April 9

Other Ways to Help

If you are unable to attend this meeting but want to be involved, please let us know.  This work will continue through to the November election.

Or, if you would rather support financially, your donation will help pay for materials like Jail Voting postcards and flyers, transportation to and from jails, and more.
