VAAC joins Promote the Vote, League of Women Voters, and ACCESS to break down what new laws mean for Michigan voters—and what’s at stake if we don’t act.
Last week, the Voting Access for All Coalition participated in a statewide press call led by Promote the Vote, with coalition leaders from the League of Women Voters of Michigan and ACCESS. Together, we addressed the pressing changes in voting law—and the importance of educating and mobilizing our communities.
“We will continue to push for measures that increase transparency, accountability, and fairness in Michigan elections. This means advocating for reducing the influence of big money in politics and ensuring that voters voices are the loudest in our elections.”
— Micheal Davis Jr., Executive Director, Promote the Vote

Here’s why it matters:
- New laws are now in effect that change how Michiganders register and vote.
- Election administrators face shifting rules that impact how elections are run.
- Anti-voter efforts and ballot initiatives are being introduced that could roll back hard-won rights.
Other speakers shared key insights during the conversation:
- Melanie Macey, Policy and Government Affairs Director at Promote the Vote, emphasized the need for proactive defense against proposed anti-voter laws and the importance of organizing early and often.
- Paula Bowman, Co-President of the League of Women Voters of Michigan, stressed that expanding access on paper is not enough—voter education and engagement are critical to real-world impact.
- Shams Al-Badry, Civic Engagement Manager at ACCESS, highlighted the power of grassroots outreach and the importance of meeting voters where they are—in their communities, faith spaces, and neighborhoods.
