Youth Defense Bills Move Forward: A Win for Juvenile Justice

Great news! Today, Michigan took a critical step toward stronger legal protections for young people in the justice system. The Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee voted 5-0 to advance Senate Bill 081, which, along with House Bill 4070, will ensure that the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) can set statewide standards for juvenile legal representation.

Last session, these bills made it through both chambers but were stalled due to a technical issue in the final days of lame duck. Their reintroduction marks a renewed commitment to giving kids in the justice system access to qualified legal defense—because every child deserves fair representation.

With today’s unanimous vote, we’re one step closer to making this right. These bills still need to pass the full legislature and make it to the governor’s desk. That’s where you come in. Stay engaged, spread the word, and be ready to take action to ensure Michigan upholds justice for all—especially our youth.

📢 Take Action: Call your legislators and urge them to support SB 081 and HB 4070. Let’s get these bills across the finish line!
