Over the next several days, VAAC will provide voter education at the Brightmoor Free Store, join a community rally honoring John Lewis, lead a discussion marking the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and co-host an ID clinic offering Michigan Secretary of State services.

Brightmoor Free Store

VAAC will continue its regular Saturday outreach at the Brightmoor Free Store, providing nonpartisan voter education, voter registration assistance, and information about voting rights and civic engagement.

Community members can also access free clothing, household items, linens, toys, baby items, personal care products, breakfast, and other resources. Everyone is welcome, and all items are freely given.

Good Trouble Lives On Community Rally & Mutual Aid

VAAC will join the City of Oak Park and other voting rights organizations for a community rally honoring the life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis.

The morning will include music, speakers, children’s activities, food vendors, voting rights information, and an opportunity to support local families through mutual aid.

Attendees are invited to donate diapers, wipes, bottles, clothing, toys, menstrual products, and other supplies for mothers and young children supported by Greater Girls, Greater Women.

This event was rescheduled after air-quality concerns affected the original Good Trouble Lives On weekend.

Unite & Rise for Voting Rights

The League of Women Voters of Michigan will mark the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 with a live and virtual screening of Three Marches, Two Sisters, One Bridge, a documentary about two Selma Foot Soldiers and their work for voting rights.

The program will include a question-and-answer session with the sisters, a potluck dinner, local panelists, and a discussion led by Angela Davenport and VAAC ambassadors.

At 6:45 PM, VAAC will lead the panel discussion, connecting the history explored in the film with the continuing work to protect voting rights and expand access to the ballot.

People who cannot attend in person can watch the screening through the League of Women Voters of Michigan’s YouTube channel beginning at 5:00 PM.

Pull Up & Plug In: ID Clinic in Ferndale

VAAC is co-hosting a free ID clinic with the Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Department of State, and Jews For A Secular Democracy, with Affirmations serving as a co-sponsor.

Michigan Secretary of State services, voter education and registration, community resources, and free food will be available. The full cost of a Michigan State ID will be covered for people who qualify, and no appointment is necessary.

People seeking Secretary of State services must bring original documents. Copies will not be accepted.
