VAAC has been out connecting with communities, sharing voting information, and joining conversations about the issues affecting people’s lives!

Black Women’s Voices and the Power to Frame the Story

VAAC Executive Director Angela Davenport attended The Power to Frame the Story: Black Women in Media, hosted by Black Women in Michigan Politics at Wayne County Community College District’s Northwest Campus in Detroit.

The event brought together media professionals, elected officials, business leaders, and community members to discuss Black women’s leadership, representation, and influence in shaping public narratives.

Angela joined the gathering alongside our friends Zsa Zsa C. Hubbard and Cassy Jones-McBryde. The conversation connected closely to VAAC’s work of making sure people directly impacted by policies have opportunities to speak about their own experiences.

Thank you to Black Women in Michigan Politics for welcoming VAAC and bringing these conversations to the community!

Block Party for Democracy in Ferndale

VAAC joined Indivisible Fighting 9’s Block Party for Democracy at First United Methodist Church in Ferndale.

The gathering gave community members several ways to get involved before the November election. Activities included writing postcards to voters, creating community art, learning about observing boards of canvassers through the League of Women Voters, and exploring other ways to participate.

The Constitution Banner Project, election yard signs, and a menstrual product donation drive supporting DABO Detroit were also part of the event.

Thank you to Indivisible Fighting 9 for welcoming VAAC and bringing people together around voter education and community participation!

Voter Education at the Detroit At Work Career Fair

VAAC joined the Detroit At Work Career Fair at the Meyers Career Center on October 8, bringing voting information to people exploring employment opportunities.

Our team helped attendees with voter registration, answered voting questions, and shared ballot education ahead of the November 3 election.

Voting Information at Detroit Community Resource Events

VAAC has been connecting with Detroit residents at community events where neighbors could find resources for everyday needs while getting answers to their voting questions.

At Project Clean Slate’s October 10 Expungement Fair at Team Wellness Center, residents could meet with attorneys to learn about expungement eligibility. VAAC was there to share voter information and answer questions about participating in the November election.

Our team also joined Detroit Housing Commission Resident Services at the Envision Center for an event serving Diggs and Forest Park residents. Working alongside Redford Brightmoor Initiative, we helped residents register to vote while community partners provided additional resources.

Thank you to Project Clean Slate, Team Wellness Center, Redford Brightmoor Initiative, and Detroit Housing Commission Resident Services for bringing these opportunities to residents and welcoming VAAC!

Shop Talks: Our Voices. Our Votes. Our Communities.

Housing, employment, public safety, and voting access were all part of our Shop Talks conversation at the Horatio Williams Foundation in Detroit.

Focused on returning citizens, the gathering created space for people impacted by incarceration and the criminal legal system to discuss how voting and public policy affect their lives, families, and communities.

Participants shared experiences, asked questions, and connected with nonpartisan voter education and community resources.

Thank you to the Horatio Williams Foundation for hosting us and to our Shop Talks partners: Justus Noww, When You Vote I WIN, Speak Life Identity Coaching Concepts, Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, Barcos Foundation, Black Voters Matter Fund, and the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office!

More Young People Register to Vote at Service to Civic Action with buildOn!

We’re sharing more photos and good news from Service to Civic Action at Wayne State Law School, where VAAC helped young attendees register to vote!

Co-hosted by buildOn, VAAC, and Michigan League of Conservation Voters, the event brought together students ages 13–17 to explore community service, voting rights, and civic participation.

Students wrote postcards to voters, participated in voting-related activities, developed questions for panelists, and shared their perspectives through a Detroit Future City youth survey. They also explored upcoming service projects and contributed their own voting rights artwork to VAAC’s traveling Art of the Vote installation.

We’re especially glad to celebrate the young people who registered to vote! Thank you to buildOn, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, and all the students who participated.
