Election Day is Tuesday, August 4, but Michigan voters do not have to wait until Tuesday to register or cast a ballot.
If you still need to register, update your voter registration address, or vote, your city or township clerk and your assigned early voting site will offer weekend options.
Every city and township clerk must provide at least eight hours of weekend availability on Saturday, August 1, Sunday, August 2, or split across both days. Early voting sites must be open for at least eight hours each day through Sunday, August 2.
Because schedules and locations vary, check your local information before leaving home.
Register and vote at your clerk’s office
At this point, the only way to register to vote or update your voter registration address for the August 4 Primary Election is in person at your city or township clerk’s office or a satellite office, if your community offers one.
You must provide proof of residency showing your name and the address where you currently live. Examples include:
- A Michigan driver’s license or state ID
- A utility bill
- A bank or credit card statement
- A paycheck or government check
- Insurance documents
- A lease agreement
- A school enrollment or financial aid document
- Another government document
Documents may be shown on paper or electronically.
After registering, you can request, complete, and submit an absentee ballot at the clerk’s office.
At this point, voters should go to their clerk’s office rather than applying for an absentee ballot online or by mail.

Vote early through Sunday, August 2
Early voting sites must be open for at least eight hours each day, but exact schedules vary by community. Your early voting site may be in a different location and have different hours than your Election Day polling place.
Voting early is similar to voting at a polling place on Election Day. You will check in with an election worker, receive a ballot, mark it, and insert it directly into a tabulator.

If you need to register or update your address, go first to your city or township clerk’s office or satellite office with proof of residency.

Upcoming dates for the August 4 Primary Election
Now through August 2: Vote in person at your assigned early voting site. Visit mi.gov/vote to find the location and hours.
August 1 and 2: City and township clerks must provide at least eight hours of weekend availability on Saturday, Sunday, or across both days for in-person absentee voting. Voters can also register or update their address in person with proof of residency.
August 2: Last day of Michigan’s mandatory statewide early voting period.
August 3 at 4:00 PM: Deadline for voters who are already registered at their current address to request and vote an absentee ballot in person at their clerk’s office. After 4:00 PM, registered voters must vote at their polling place on Election Day.
August 4: Election Day. Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Eligible residents who still need to register or update their address can do so at their city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency through 8:00 PM. After registering, they can cast a ballot at the clerk’s office.

Track voting across Michigan
The Michigan Department of State has relaunched the Michigan Voting Dashboard, which provides daily updates about absentee voting, early voting, and voter registration across the state.
The dashboard uses aggregated data from Michigan’s Qualified Voter File. It does not identify individual voters and does not report election results. Vote totals and election results will come from election officials after polls close.

This preserves the genuinely useful update without creating a second post that repeats the same voting instructions. I would leave the July 21 numbers out unless we update them close to publication.
