During last week’s VAAC Friday Community Meeting: Women Leading the Fight for Housing Justice, participants heard from Cicely Allen, Co-Executive Director of the Wisdom Institute, about efforts underway in Detroit to protect tenants and strengthen housing stability.
One of the key initiatives discussed was the Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition (DRTC), a network of tenants, advocates, community organizations, and legal professionals working to ensure Detroit’s Right to Counsel law is fully funded, fully implemented, and accessible to every eligible Detroiter facing eviction.
Detroit’s Right to Counsel law provides legal representation for tenants facing eviction, helping ensure residents are not forced to navigate complex housing court proceedings without support. Access to legal representation can make a critical difference for families working to remain in their homes and maintain housing stability.
The Detroit Right to Counsel Coalition works to:
- Ensure the Right to Counsel law is fully implemented and accessible
- Build community awareness about tenant protections and housing rights
- Support organizing efforts that strengthen housing justice across Detroit
Community members who are interested in housing justice and tenant protections are encouraged to learn more about the coalition and get involved.
