Reentry Starts With ID: Join Call With Us on January 27

People returning home from federal prison face many barriers, but one obstacle blocks almost everything else: the lack of valid identification. Without an ID, it can be nearly impossible to secure housing, find employment, access health care or public benefits, or fully participate in our democracy. Identification is a foundational requirement for rebuilding stability and exercising the right to vote, making ID access not just a reentry issue, but a democracy issue.

On Tuesday, January 27 at 1:30 PM EST, VAAC is joining community partners for a Call With Us action in support of the BOP Release Card ID Act (HR 5152). This legislation would require the Bureau of Prisons to issue valid identification to U.S. citizens when they leave federal custody. It is a simple, common-sense step that removes one of the biggest barriers to successful reentry.

This is a short, guided advocacy action. Participants will learn about the bill, receive talking points, and be supported as they contact their members of Congress during the event.
