Lawmakers consider granting state legislators unrestricted access to correctional facilities
Yesterday, the House Government Operations Committee heard House Bill 4669, which would grant state legislators unrestricted access to Michigan correctional facilities at any time and without prior notification. This measure is a vital step toward transparency and accountability within the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Access matters. When elected officials can see conditions firsthand, they gain the insight needed to make informed policy decisions and ensure the humane treatment of people in custody. HB 4669 recognizes that public trust and safety are strengthened when oversight is not limited or delayed.

VAAC supports HB 4669 and stands with partners across the state calling for full, timely access to Michigan’s prisons and jails. True reform requires visibility, and this bill helps make that possible.
