Michigan’s reentry expansion bill recognizes what every returning citizen knows: coming home is hard work
Our coalition was built by people who have lived it. VAAC co-founder Daniel Jones survived a sentence of life without parole imposed when he was a teenager. When he finally returned home years later, he stepped into adulthood for the first time, learning basics many people do as teens: opening a first bank account, navigating housing, and finding work. Even with dedicated reentry advocates and programs in Michigan, starting over after decades inside is a battle that demands real, sustained support.
That reality is what makes House Bill 4211 so important. On November 5, 2025, the bill passed out of the House Judiciary Committee and advanced to the House floor. HB 4211 would ensure that people who are resentenced or exonerated and released before their maximum sentence can access Michigan’s reentry services, support that helps stabilize housing, employment, IDs, and community connections.
VAAC supports HB 4211, and we also support expanding reentry services to everyone coming home, including people who “max out” their sentences. No matter the legal pathway to release, every person deserves the tools to rebuild and thrive.
