Housing is a Human Right
April is Fair Chance Housing Month, a time to raise awareness about the systemic barriers that prevent people with conviction histories from accessing safe and stable housing. Across Michigan and the nation, countless individuals face discrimination from landlords, limiting their opportunities to rebuild their lives.
The Fair Chance Access to Housing Act, long advocated for by the Vera Institute of Justice and Nation Outside, aims to reduce these discriminatory practices. This legislation would ensure that people with conviction histories have a fair chance at securing rental housing, fostering safer, stronger communities.

Why Fair Chance Housing Matters
Access to stable housing is one of the most critical factors in reducing recidivism and supporting successful reentry. Yet, far too many returning citizens are denied housing due to outdated and harmful policies. By supporting fair chance housing, we:
- Break the cycle of recidivism by providing people with stable living conditions.
- Strengthen communities by empowering individuals to rebuild their lives.
- Reduce taxpayer costs associated with reincarceration.
