VAAC in the Community: Voting Rights, Youth Voices, and Connections Across Michigan

From civic conversations in Ypsilanti to public election equipment testing in Southfield, youth artwork in Detroit, and community resource events, VAAC has been busy connecting with people across Southeast Michigan!

We’ve been sharing photos and stories from these visits on social media, and we’d love your help getting them seen. Take a moment to view, like, comment on, and share our posts on Instagram and Facebook. It’s a simple way to help more people learn about VAAC’s work and the voting resources available in their communities.

Civic Engagement & Soul Food Dinner in Ypsilanti

On October 11, VAAC joined Survivors Speak for a Civic Engagement & Soul Food Dinner at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Ypsilanti.

Our team shared a meal and connected with neighbors and friends from the League of Women Voters Washtenaw County, Change Up Midnight Coalition, and We ROC. The gathering brought people together for conversations about civic education and staying involved in their communities beyond Election Day.

Thank you to Survivors Speak for bringing everyone together and including VAAC!

VAAC Observes Public Election Equipment Testing in Southfield

VAAC Executive Director Angela Davenport joined Charles Thomas from When You Vote I Win, Nomi Joyrich from Jews For A Secular Democracy, and Ben Gardner from All Voting Is Local Michigan at a public logic and accuracy test in Southfield on October 13.

Our team observed how local election officials test voting equipment before Election Day and had an opportunity to ask questions about the process. Thank you to the election staff who explained the testing procedures and answered our questions!

Young Artists Add to VAAC’s Art of the Vote with buildOn

Our traveling Art of the Vote installation is growing again, thanks to some creative young people from buildOn!

VAAC co-hosted Service to Civic Action with buildOn, bringing together students ages 13–17 to explore community service, voting rights, and civic participation. Students participated in voter postcard activities, asked questions, and created their own voting rights artwork at VAAC’s art station.

Their pieces are now part of Art of the Vote, which recently returned from ArtPrize and continues to travel to new communities.

Thank you to buildOn and all the students who contributed their creativity and perspectives!

Connecting with Residents at The Villages at Parkside

VAAC joined community partners at The Villages at Parkside in Detroit to connect residents with information and resources close to home.

Our team shared voter education, answered questions, and helped residents prepare for the November election. These conversations also gave us an opportunity to hear directly from community members about what’s on their minds.

Thank you to Detroit Housing Commission Resident Services for welcoming VAAC and to the community partners who participated!

Free State ID Services at DABO’s Community Wellness Fair

VAAC helped organize and bring another Pull Up & Plug In Michigan State ID Clinic to DABO Detroit’s Community Wellness Fair on October 8.

The Michigan Department of State Mobile Unit provided State ID assistance at no cost for qualifying residents, while VAAC and our partners offered voter registration support, voter education, and community resource information.

The fair also included health screenings, flu vaccines, mental health resources, and other services for residents and families.

Thank you to DABO Detroit for hosting, and to the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office, Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, and Jews for a Secular Democracy for partnering with us on the ID clinic!

Conversations with Detroit School Board Candidates

VAAC attended the DPSCD Candidates Speed-Dating Dinner & Dialogue on October 1, joining Detroit neighbors for dinner and conversations about the future of Detroit’s public schools.

The event gave community members an opportunity to engage directly with school board candidates and learn more about the people seeking to represent them.

Thank you to CitizenDetroit and the Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Kappa for organizing the gathering and welcoming VAAC!
