Barbershops and salons have long been places where people exchange information, talk about what is happening in their communities, and build relationships. On September 14, VAAC and community partners are bringing voting and civic engagement into that conversation.
Barbershop Talks: Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Power will bring community members, barbers, salon professionals, civic organizations, and the Michigan Department of State together for a nonpartisan conversation about reaching voters in trusted community spaces.
The event is part of a broader effort to bring accurate voting information directly into barbershops, salons, local businesses, and neighborhood gathering places across Michigan. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about voter registration and voting options, ask questions, and connect with election information and resources from the Michigan Department of State.
The conversation will also look beyond the 2026 election and discuss how barbershops and salons can have a larger role in civic engagement. Topics will include the Michigan Voting Rights Act, investment in community-led civic education and voter engagement, formal recognition of barbershops and salons as nonpartisan voter-engagement partners, and opportunities for civic engagement to count toward continuing education for barbers and cosmetologists.
VAAC is working on this initiative with When You Vote I Win, Speak Life, Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, BARCOS, and the Michigan Department of State.
