This Women’s History Month, come to our next VAAC Friday Community Meeting, co-hosted by the Wisdom Institute on March 13 at 12:30 PM for a conversation about housing instability, tenant rights, and the policies shaping housing access across Michigan.
Across Michigan and especially in Detroit, too many families are facing eviction threats, rising housing costs, and housing instability while trying to navigate systems that can feel overwhelming and difficult to understand. Many tenants do not know their rights or where to turn for help. At the same time, homelessness continues to rise and people are too often criminalized simply for not having a place to live. For many individuals returning home from incarceration, finding safe and stable housing remains one of the greatest barriers to rebuilding their lives.
We are honored to welcome State Representative Kristian Grant of Michigan’s 82nd House District, who will discuss a bipartisan package of housing and zoning reform bills supported in both the Michigan House and Senate. These proposals are focused on making it easier for communities to build housing and address the growing housing shortage across the state.
We will also be joined by Cicely Allen, Co-Executive Director of Wisdom Institute, a Detroit based grassroots organization working to advance the lives and leadership of women and girls through healing justice. Wisdom Institute is helping build a Trusted Messenger Network to ensure tenants know their rights and have support navigating the housing system, including connections to Detroit’s Right to Counsel initiative, which provides legal representation to tenants facing eviction.
This conversation will explore the connection between housing instability, tenant rights, housing policy, and community power, and why understanding our rights and participating in civic life remain critical tools in protecting our communities.
