Detroit and beyond — voters shape local leadership for the years ahead
On August 5, Michigan voters took to the polls to decide critical municipal races and local ballot measures across the state. From Detroit to New Baltimore, communities selected candidates who will advance to the November general election — and set the tone for the issues ahead.
In Detroit, City Council President Mary Sheffield (51%) and Rev. Solomon Kinloch (17%) will face off in November for mayor. Voters also advanced incumbents Mary Waters and Coleman Young II in the at-large City Council race, joined by Janee’ Ayers and James Harris.
Other highlights:
- Southfield – Mayor Kenson Siver will face Sylvia Jordan.
- Pontiac – Mike McGuinness and Kermit Williams advance in a crowded race to replace Mayor Tim Greimel.
- Hamtramck – Adam Alharbi and Muhith Mahmood move forward in the mayoral race.
- Taylor – Mayor Tim Woolley will run against Herman “Butch” Ramik.
- Dearborn Heights – Mo Baydoun and Denise Malinowski Maxwell advance.
Local ballot proposals, school funding measures, and city initiatives were also decided, shaping budgets and priorities for the coming years.
