Michigan Voter Rights Are Under Attack — Stand Up and Speak Out

A deceptive petition threatens to silence thousands of voters. Join VAAC and allies to stop it before it reaches the ballot.

The Voting Access for All Coalition is sounding the alarm: a dangerous constitutional amendment proposal is moving forward in Michigan, and we need your voice more than ever.

A group misleadingly named “The Committee to Protect Voter’s Rights” is pushing a petition to require proof of citizenship to register to vote. If they succeed, this initiative will appear on the ballot—and could strip away hard-won rights from countless eligible voters in Michigan.

Who would be harmed?

  • Low-income voters
  • Students
  • Formerly incarcerated community members
  • Elderly and disabled voters
  • Military and overseas voters
  • Married women and others who have changed their legal names

Most Michiganders don’t have a passport or easy access to documents required under this proposal. It’s a poll tax in disguise—and it flies in the face of the inclusive policies Michigan voters overwhelmingly supported in 2018 and 2022.

Why We’re Speaking Out

The 100-word summary that will appear with the petition is not true or impartial. It hides the real consequences for everyday voters and omits:

  • The financial burden imposed on people without documents
  • The impact on groups like seniors, returning citizens, and disabled voters
  • The fact that this proposal would repeal rights Michigan voters already affirmed

It’s misleading, exclusionary, and dangerous.
