Urgent Call to Action: Protect Voting Rights – Oppose HJR B Now

Protect Voting Rights: Oppose HJR B
At the Voting Access for All Coalition, we fight to ensure returning citizens, formerly incarcerated individuals, and justice-impacted communities have full and equal access to their right to vote.

House Joint Resolution B (HJR B) threatens this mission by requiring documentary proof of citizenship (e.g., passports or birth certificates) to register to vote. These barriers disproportionately harm the communities we serve, as many individuals reentering society face significant challenges obtaining such documents.

Why This Matters:

  • HJR B creates unnecessary obstacles for returning citizens, who automatically regain their right to vote upon release but often lack access to required documents.
  • Obtaining these documents is costly and time-consuming, effectively acting as a modern-day poll tax.
  • This resolution contradicts the will of Michigan voters, who supported expanded ballot access through Proposal 22-2.

Who’s Harmed?

  • Formerly incarcerated individuals
  • Women (especially married women), seniors, college students, tribal citizens
  • Rural communities and active-duty military members

Act Now:

  1. Submit Written Testimony: Email Clerk Thrush at tthrush@house.mi.gov
  2. Testify in Person: Attend the meeting on March 4th at 9:00 a.m.

If you wish to testify in person, please notify the clerk and the chairs as soon as possible If you cannot testify but want to register your opposition to HJR B, you can email the clerk to state your name (or organization’s name) and your position on the resolution.

Your voice is crucial to stop HJR B and protect voting rights for all Michiganders.
