This Week’s Legislative Highlights

🔹 Corrections Ombudsman Expansion (SB0156): A new Senate bill seeks to expand the investigative and reporting powers of the Legislative Corrections Ombudsman’s office. This effort is being championed by Citizens for Prison Reform to ensure more oversight and accountability in Michigan’s correctional facilities.

🔹 Violence Prevention Trust Fund (HB4231 & HB4232): These House bills propose the creation of a sustainable funding stream for community violence intervention programs, directing 6.5% of trust fund revenues (about $5M annually) toward grants. However, an alternative bill package is being introduced that would allocate just 2% to violence intervention programs. MI-CEMI supports the higher funding allocation to ensure impactful community-based violence prevention efforts.
