Support the 2026 Budget Recommendations
On March 24th, 2025, a coalition of organizations released their 2026 Michigan Budget Recommendations to invest in crime prevention, rehabilitation, and reentry. These recommendations call on lawmakers to support evidence-based programs that promote public safety and help people successfully reintegrate into society.
Take Action
You can read the letter and send a letter to your lawmaker through the MI-CEMI website.

Why It Matters
With Michigan experiencing record-low rates of violent crime and low recidivism rates, the 2026 budget presents a significant opportunity to expand programs that work.
Key Recommendations
- Invest in violence prevention by funding juvenile defense standards (HB 4070), supporting the bipartisan sentencing commission, and continuing the Community Violence Intervention grants.
- Support rehabilitation by eliminating unnecessary medical copays, expanding educational opportunities in prisons, and ensuring access to quality appellate defense.
- Strengthen reentry efforts by investing in transitional healthcare and maintaining funding for peer reentry navigators.
These investments are not only effective in improving public safety but also in reducing long-term prison costs and enhancing economic stability across the state.
