Michigan’s Civil Rights at the VAAC Friday Community Meeting

VAAC Friday Community Meetings are a weekly space for connection, updates, and shared learning.

We bring together directly impacted people, organizers, advocates, and community members across Michigan to talk about voting access, the criminal legal system, and the issues shaping our lives and communities.

Each week we focus on timely topics including policy changes, community organizing, and civic education. There is always space for questions, conversation, and strategy.

Join us for this week’s Friday Meeting featuring special guest — John E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR).

Attorney Johnson leads the state agency charged with enforcing Michigan’s civil rights laws and advancing equity and justice across the state. This is an important opportunity to discuss Michigan’s civil rights landscape, hear directly from one of the state’s leading civil rights voices, and explore the critical intersection between civil rights and voting rights.

We’ll also talk about how the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) works to protect and expand access to the ballot for all Michiganders — and what that means for our communities moving forward.

Don’t miss this powerful conversation about the future of civil rights and civic participation in Michigan, co-hosted by the Wisdom Institute.
