#CantAdultYet: Applying psychological and neuroscience research to the sentencing of emerging adults

Carol Holden, Ph.D., ABPP

June 17, 2025 | Noon to 1:30pm | Zoom

The same attributes that distinguish younger adolescents from adults also distinguish emerging adults (18- to 25- year olds) from older adults, a fact relied upon by recent Michigan cases (Pooole, Czarnecki, and Taylor) that extended Miller protections to 18-, 19-, and 20-year olds facing the possibility of life without parole. In this training, attendees will learn findings from psychological and neuroscience research that help explain the high crime rate among emerging adults and that are potentially relevant to their sentencing, whether or not life without parole is at issue.
