From 505051 MI:

NOT ON THE 17th ‼️

We’re very pleased to announce one of our events for the month of July – in cooperation with 50501 National and the rest of our resistance family, we are honoring the memory of the late John Lewis, legendary civil rights activist and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 33 years before his death in 2020.

John Lewis is one of the primary figures responsible for informing our approaches and behaviors regarding protest – he was a staunch advocate of non-violent protest as a means to create change for the common person, and the example he set has rippled through nearly all protest movements since his participation in the 1960 Nashville sit-ins and Freedom Rides at only 20 years old.

50501MI is proud to celebrate his life, sacrifices, and lessons with an afternoon that will bring our community together to connect with one another outside of the digital bubble we all organize and live much of our lives within, and the role that mutual aid serves in furtherance of the messages of unity, progressive politics, and non-violent resistance that our organization and our friends in other local organizations share with him.

On July 19th, we invite everyone to come to Palmer Park in Detroit for an afternoon of food, fun, community development and support for those of us who are in need. If our government will not do their jobs and provide social safety nets, then we will take that challenge on headfirst.

It is clear that we are going to have to band together across every facet and difference in our society to make change – just as Rep. Lewis understood and grew in his time fighting for and defending the rights and lives of minorities across the country. Come through and let’s start a new chapter, one where every single person is cared for, fed and clothed by one another.

If they won’t do it, we will.

Love to all. Every day is another step toward the liberation of the many from the whims of the few. It starts here – we’ll need every ounce of effort we have to give to keep everyone of us afloat, because every single person deserves the opportunity to live without fear of their basic needs being taken at any given time.
