Today’s VAAC Friday Community Meeting: Women Leading the Fight for Housing Justice

Today’s VAAC Friday Community Meeting recognizes Women’s History Month with a conversation about housing instability, tenant rights, and the policies shaping housing access across Michigan. The meeting is co-hosted by the Wisdom Institute and highlights the leadership of women working to advance housing justice and community stability.

Today’s discussion, “Know Your Rights: A Conversation on Tenant Protections and Housing Policy,” will explore how housing policy, tenant protections, and civic participation shape housing access and stability in Michigan.

Across Michigan and especially in Detroit, many families are navigating rising housing costs, eviction threats, and housing instability while trying to understand systems that can be difficult to access. Understanding tenant rights and the policies shaping housing access is an important part of protecting housing stability and community wellbeing.

Today’s meeting will feature:

State Representative Kristian Grant, who represents Michigan’s 82nd House District, discussing bipartisan housing and zoning reform legislation and how decisions in the Michigan Legislature affect housing access and stability across the state.

Cicely Allen, Co-Executive Director of the Wisdom Institute, sharing insights about tenant education, the Trusted Messenger Network, and connections to Detroit’s Right to Counsel initiative, which provides legal representation to tenants facing eviction.

Community members will also have an opportunity to participate in discussion about housing policy, tenant protections, and how civic participation can influence the policies that shape housing stability.

The next VAAC Meeting will be on Friday, March 27.
