Join VAAC and Michigan Roundtable for a Critical Conversation on Expanding Access Behind Bars
Voting is a fundamental right—and no one should be denied participation in democracy simply because they’re incarcerated pretrial or serving a misdemeanor sentence. Yet, across Michigan, access to the ballot is still blocked by logistical barriers, misinformation, and systemic neglect.
At VAAC, we believe that every voice matters—including those behind jail walls. Join us for our next Friday Community Meeting on June 20th from 12:30–1:30 PM EST, where we’ll explore how local advocacy is expanding jail voting access and building meaningful pathways to reentry.
This week’s conversation, co-hosted with the Michigan Roundtable for Just Communities, will feature Genesee County Sheriff Christopher R. Swanson and highlight the I.G.N.I.T.E. program—a model that uses education and job training to reduce recidivism and disrupt generational incarceration.
What you’ll learn:
- Current challenges and solutions in Michigan jail voting
- Strategies for building bridges between civic access and reentry
- How directly impacted people are leading change
