Recognizing Dignity, Opportunity, and Community
April marks Second Chance Month, a time to honor the dignity of people seeking a fresh start. Whether it’s through expungement fairs to clear criminal records, peer-led reentry programs for returning citizens, or the chance to have a Second Look at a sentence, there are countless ways to support second chances and build stronger communities.
At the Voting Access for All Coalition, we recognize that second chances are essential for creating pathways to opportunity and fostering a sense of belonging for all.

Many Ways to Support Second Chances:
- Shift the Narrative: Reducing stigma is a crucial part of supporting second chances. Changing the way we talk about people impacted by the legal system can open doors to opportunity. Use humanizing language, challenge harmful stereotypes, and advocate for policies that acknowledge the capacity for growth and change.
- Promote Employment Opportunities: Many returning citizens face barriers to employment. Fair chance hiring initiatives encourage employers to consider candidates based on qualifications and potential, rather than past convictions. Supporting businesses that participate in these programs creates a more inclusive workforce.
- Ensure Access to Vital Documents: Without essential documents like IDs or birth certificates, it can be nearly impossible for people returning from incarceration to secure housing, employment, or medical care. Expanding access to these documents is a simple but impactful step toward successful reentry.
- Support Peer-Led Reentry Programs: Transitioning back into the community can be challenging. Programs like TIPLR (Trauma-Informed Peer-Led Reentry) provide mentorship and guidance from individuals who have successfully navigated reentry. Through this support, returning citizens gain access to essential resources like housing, employment, and community connections.
- Advocate for Fair Chance Housing: People with conviction histories often face discrimination when trying to secure stable housing. Supporting fair chance housing policies ensures everyone has the opportunity to find a safe place to call home.
