VAAC Friday Community Meeting: Proportional Representation: How It Works and What It Could Mean for Representation
Heard of proportional representation but not quite sure what it is, how it works, or why people are talking about it?
Join Voting Access For All Coalition for our next statewide Friday Community Meeting on Friday, September 25, from 12:30 to 1:30 PM ET on Zoom at vaac.me/Fridays, featuring a special guest from Votantes, no políticos.
We’ll explore what proportional representation means, how it differs from the electoral systems most of us are familiar with, and what different approaches could mean for who gets represented in our democracy.
Esta reunión tratará sobre:
- What proportional representation means and how it works
- How it differs from electoral systems many voters are more familiar with
- What different approaches could mean for who gets represented
- What changes to the way representatives are elected could mean for Black communities, justice-impacted people, communities of color, and other groups that have often been underrepresented in elected office and political decision-making
- What different systems might mean for the ability of communities to elect candidates who reflect their interests and experiences
- How different systems might affect the relationship between voters, representatives, and political parties
- Community questions and discussion
Whether you’ve only heard the term in passing or have been following the conversation for a while, this is an opportunity to learn, ask questions, challenge assumptions, and better understand the growing conversation about how representation itself is structured in our democracy.
