Michigan’s November 3 General Election is approaching, and several important voting deadlines are coming up next week.
If you still need to register to vote, update your voter registration, or return an absentee ballot, here’s what you need to know about the October 19 and October 20 dates.
You can still register and vote after October 19. But starting October 20, you’ll need to register in person at your city or township clerk’s office and bring proof of residency.
October 19: Last day to register online or by mail
Monday, October 19, is the last day to register to vote or update your registration online or by mail for the November 3 election.
You can register or check your voter registration information at mi.gov/voto.
Missed the October 19 deadline? You can still register!
A partir de Tuesday, October 20, through 8:00 PM on Election Day, November 3, you can register to vote or update your registration in person at your city or township clerk’s office.
You’ll need to complete a voter registration application and provide proof of residency.
What counts as proof of residency?
Proof of residency is a document showing both your name and the address where you currently live.
- A Michigan driver’s license or state ID card
- Una factura de servicios públicos
- Un extracto bancario
- Un cheque de pago
- Un control gubernamental
- Another government document
To find your city or township clerk’s office, visit mi.gov/voto.
Remember: October 19 is not the last day you can register to vote in Michigan. It is the last day to register online or by mail for this election. In-person registration continues through Election Day.
October 20: Recommended last day to mail your absentee ballot
Already have your absentee ballot?
For most Michigan voters, Tuesday, October 20, is the last day Promote the Vote recommends putting your completed absentee ballot in the mail to help avoid postal delays.
This is a recommendation, not a legal deadline.
A partir de Wednesday, October 21, Promote the Vote recommends returning your absentee ballot in person rather than mailing it.
You can return your completed absentee ballot to:
- Your city or township clerk’s office
- A satellite clerk’s office
- A secure absentee ballot drop box in your city or township
For most voters, your completed absentee ballot must be received by your local clerk by 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 3 to be counted.
To find a secure drop box in your community, go to mi.gov/voto and select “Your voter information.”
Military and overseas voters have a different deadline
If you’re serving in the military or living overseas, different absentee ballot return rules apply.
For eligible military and overseas voters returning ballots by mail, the ballot must be:
- Postmarked on or before November 3
- Received by the local clerk no later than November 9
Eligible military members may also have an electronic ballot-return option, with a different deadline.
For details about military and overseas voting, visit the Michigan Department of State’s military and overseas voting page.
October 24: Statewide early voting begins
Saturday, October 24, is the first day of Michigan’s required nine-day statewide early voting period.
Every Michigan community must offer in-person early voting at a designated early voting site from October 24 through November 1.
Early voting gives registered voters the opportunity to cast their ballots in person before Election Day.
Your early voting location may be different from your usual Election Day polling place. Find the dates, hours, and locations for your community at mi.gov/voto.
November 3: Election Day
Tuesday, November 3, is Election Day. Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM en Michigan.
If you’re already registered, you can vote at your assigned polling place. If you still need to register or update your registration, visit your city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency. Eligible voters in line at the clerk’s office by 8:00 PM can register and vote.
You can also use mi.gov/voto to check your registration, find your polling place, locate your clerk’s office, and track your absentee ballot.
Keep these dates handy
