Election Day is over, but some Michigan voters may still need to take one final step to make sure their absentee ballot can be counted.

Voters have until 5:00 PM on Friday, August 7, to correct a missing or mismatched signature on an absentee ballot from the August 4 Primary Election.

Check the status of your ballot

When a city or township clerk receives an absentee ballot, the clerk compares the signature on the ballot return envelope with the voter’s signature on file.

If the envelope is missing a signature or the signatures do not match closely enough, the ballot is rejected unless the voter corrects, or “cures,” the problem by the deadline.

Your clerk must notify you if your ballot was rejected because of a signature issue and provide information about:

• Why the signature was rejected
• How to correct the problem
• The deadline for correcting it

Notification may be sent by phone, email, text message, or mail, depending on the contact information available to the clerk.

You can also check your absentee ballot status at mi.gov/voto by selecting “Your voter information.”

Correct the issue by Friday

If your absentee ballot was rejected because of a missing or mismatched signature, contact your city or township clerk immediately and follow the instructions provided.

Michigan voters may submit an Absent Voter Ballot Signature Cure Form to their clerk by email, mail, or in person. The clerk must receive the completed form by 5:00 PM on Friday, August 7, for the ballot to be accepted for tabulation.

County Boards of Canvassers are now reviewing election records and completing the official canvass of the August 4 Primary Election.

August 7 at 5:00 PM: Deadline to correct a signature issue on an absentee ballot.

August 18: Deadline for Boards of County Canvassers to complete their canvasses and certify election results within their counties.

August 24: Deadline for the Michigan Board of State Canvassers to meet to canvass the August Primary Election.
