The event is hosted by llanto silencioso inc. y Sueño.org and brings together community leaders, advocates, and organizers for a powerful recognition of the criminal legal system’s impact on our communities and a call to action for healing, justice, and transformation.
Voting Access for All Coalition (VAAC) is proud to serve as a co-sponsor of this event for the last few years.
Día de la Empatía is the nation’s largest day of action for criminal justice reform. The movement brings together people from all walks of life who have been negatively impacted by America’s criminal legal system, from survivors of violent crime to people who are currently incarcerated, from loved ones advocating for their freedom to children of incarcerated parents, and community members impacted by crime, public safety issues, and violence.
This movement captures the voices of those most affected by mass incarceration, centering lived experiences and the realities faced by people connected to the criminal legal system, including the experiences of women incarcerated at Huron Valley State Prison for Women.
Speakers and honorees for the Michigan event include:
Celia Colón, re-entry and youth advocate and certified speaker focused on second chances and community empowerment.
Troy Muhammad, community leader and Minister of Muhammad Mosque #1 in Detroit, dedicated to uplifting the community and advocating for justice and education.
Amani Sawari, media and policy scholar whose work examines how media representation impacts the socioeconomic realities of Black communities.
Marilyn J. Mosby, trailblazing attorney and former Baltimore State’s Attorney known for advancing progressive criminal justice reform.
Ángela Davenport, Executive Director of Voting Access for All Coalition, who works to build civic power with people impacted by incarceration, poverty, housing instability, and systemic exclusion.
