As Michigan voters prepare for the November 3 election, VAAC is taking voter education directly into shelters, social service organizations, and other community spaces.

People experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or other periods of transition can face additional challenges accessing clear, practical information about when, where, and how to vote. VAAC’s upcoming programs are designed to provide that information directly in places where people are already receiving services and connecting with community resources.

Going beyond voter registration

Voter registration is one part of these programs, but it is not the only focus.

At each location, VAAC will provide practical voter education covering voting eligibility and rights, voter registration and registration status, early voting, absentee voting, Election Day voting, and what voters can expect to see on their ballots.

Participants will also have opportunities to ask questions, review ballot information, and develop an individual voting plan based on how and when they want to vote.

Understanding Proposals 1 and 2

Ballot education will include the two statewide proposals Michigan voters will see in November.

Proposal 1 asks whether Michigan should convene a constitutional convention in 2027 to draft a general revision of the Michigan Constitution. If a convention is held, any proposed new or revised constitution would later be presented to Michigan voters for approval or rejection.

Proposal 2 asks voters whether Michigan should enact a law restricting campaign contributions from certain regulated electric and gas utilities, government contractors receiving more than $250,000 annually in government contracts, and certain people and organizations connected to them. It would also expand campaign-finance disclosure requirements for some political communications, including communications that identify candidates or ballot questions and certain internet political communications.

VAAC will help participants understand what each question asks so they can recognize the proposals when they see them on their ballots.

Where VAAC will be providing voter education

September 12: Crossroads of Michigan

VAAC and Crossroads of Michigan will host a Community Voter Education & Voting Rights Program en Detroit.

The interactive program will include voter registration and status support, information about voting rights and voting options, ballot education, and individual voting-plan development.

September 15: Robert J. Delonis Center

En Día Nacional del Registro de Votantes, VAAC will bring the program to the Robert J. Delonis Center in Ann Arbor.

The Delonis Center houses the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County, which provides shelter and housing support to people experiencing homelessness.

VAAC will continue the outreach at Auntie Na’s Village on Detroit’s west side.

Auntie Na’s Village is a grassroots nonprofit community organization that has transformed abandoned houses and vacant lots into community resource spaces providing support to neighborhood residents.

Coming soon: Pope Francis Center

VAAC will also bring voter education to the Pope Francis Center in Detroit, which provides services and support for people experiencing homelessness.

The date is still being scheduled, and we will share it once it is confirmed.

More locations to come

These are the first of several voter education programs VAAC is planning ahead of the November election. We’ll share additional locations and dates as they are confirmed.

You do not need to wait for one of these programs to make sure you are ready to vote. Visit mi.gov/voto a check your registration status, find your local clerk, request or track an absentee ballot, find early voting information, locate your polling place, y view your sample ballot.

If you are not registered to vote, eligible Michigan residents can submit a new voter registration application online at mi.gov/vacc while online registration remains available for the November election.
