VAAC has been making the rounds across Detroit and Metro Detroit, tabling at community events and connecting with people where they already gather.

Over the past couple of weeks, our ambassadors have joined back-to-school celebrations, family events, resource fairs, and neighborhood gatherings. We have also been showing up in spaces where important decisions about voting access are being made.

At community events, VAAC provides voter and civic education, answers voting questions, helps eligible residents register to vote, and shares accurate information about voting rights in Michigan.

VAAC Across Detroit and Metro Detroit

VAAC recently joined the Ruth Ellis Center Block Party in Highland Park, the Men’s Resource Fair & Backpack Giveaway hosted by Focus: HOPE and the City of Detroit Health Department, the 3rd Annual Book Bag Giveaway at Detroit People’s Food Co-op, and the Quinn Road Reunion.

From back-to-school celebrations and family activities to community resources and programs supporting men and families, each gathering brought people together around something a little different.

VAAC was there with the community, providing voter and civic education, answering questions, offering voter registration support, and making space for conversations about voting and civic participation.

Much appreciation to Ruth Ellis Center, Focus: HOPE, the City of Detroit Health Department, Detroit People’s Food Co-op, the organizers and community partners who helped make these events possible, and everyone who stopped by the VAAC table to connect with us.

Following the Board of State Canvassers Process

VAAC’s work also includes being present when decisions affecting voting access are being made.

On August 24, VAAC Executive Director Angela Davenport joined many of our election protection partners at the Michigan Board of State Canvassers meeting as the Board considered the Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan petition.

After hours of reviewing disputed signatures and hearing arguments from both sides, the four-member bipartisan Board deadlocked. Because a majority was required for certification, the proposal was not certified for the November ballot at that meeting.

The process may not be over. Supporters of the proposal have indicated that they plan to seek review by the Michigan Supreme Court.

VAAC will continue following the process closely and sharing clear information about what happens next.
