VAAC has been connecting with people across Detroit and Highland Park at events centered on voting, community resources, housing, food access, disability, and the issues affecting young people.

At each event, VAAC ambassadors answered voting questions, shared accurate information about voting in Michigan, and reminded attendees that many people who assume they cannot vote are eligible.

Get Out to Vote in Detroit

VAAC spent the first day of early voting at Get Out to Vote, hosted by the City of Detroit Department of Elections.

Families and community members gathered for voting information, entertainment, children’s activities, and local resources. VAAC was there to answer questions, provide voter education, and help residents understand when and where they could vote early.

We appreciate the City of Detroit Department of Elections for bringing the community together and everyone who stopped by the VAAC table.

8th Annual Southside Summer Fest

The 8th Annual Southside Summer Fest brought three days of music, culture, recreation, and community resources to Exchange Park in Jackson.

VAAC joined the weekend celebration to provide voter education and connect with residents. The festival also featured children’s activities, championship basketball games, a Sunday jazz session, a fashion showcase, local vendors, food, and a car and bike show.

We appreciate the organizers and community partners who made the festival possible, everyone who stopped to talk with VAAC, and Hakim Nathaniel Crampton for the vision and leadership behind an event that created space for families, local businesses, artists, and neighbors to come together.

Youth Round Table

Young people came ready to discuss elections, candidates, and the decisions affecting their lives and communities at the Youth Round Table.

VAAC answered voting questions, shared accurate information, and listened to what participants had to say. The gathering gave young people space to speak honestly, ask questions, connect with one another, and be taken seriously.

Feria de recursos comunitarios de Avalon Village

At the Avalon Village Community Resource Fair, VAAC connected with Highland Park residents and helped people get the voting information they needed.

Avalon Village is a sustainable eco-village where community members can find support related to health and wellness, housing, food security, education, legal needs, utilities, and more. VAAC provided voter education, answered questions, and helped eligible residents register to vote.

We appreciate Avalon Village, the participating organizations, and everyone who stopped by to connect with us.

Restorative Housing & Food Access Summit

VAAC also joined Detroit residents, disabled community members, community leaders, and local officials at the Restorative Housing & Food Access Summit at Heilmann Recreation Center.

The summit created space for conversations about safe and accessible housing, equitable food access, disability, mutual aid, accessibility support, and other practical community needs. At our table, VAAC shared voter education, answered questions, and connected with residents about voting rights and civic participation in Michigan.

Much appreciation to the Fannie Lou Hamer Leadership Program, the American Association of People with Disabilities, Building Beyond Barriers LLC, LWSC Community Circle, The YVAC Fund, and everyone who helped bring the day together.
