Renewing Our Fight for Black Liberation
Join Detroit for three days of unity, art, and resistance across Detroit as we honor the ancestors and continue the work of liberation. Liberated Zones Weekend: Assata’s Legacy brings together community, culture, and conversation to remind us that the struggle continues — and that joy itself is a form of resistance.

Day 1 – Reclaiming Our Story
Friday, Oct. 31 | 7:30–9 PM
Mama Akua Community House, 2431 Ferry Park Street, Detroit, MI
We begin under the stars with a fireside chat and community screening of Camino de la redención, a powerful documentary exploring resilience, justice, and rebirth. Gather with us to reflect, remember, and reclaim the stories that shaped our path to freedom.
Day 2 – Get on the Bus: Liberated Zone Tour
Saturday, Nov. 1 | 9 AM–3 PM
Meet-up at MACH (Check-in 8:30 AM)
Led by historian Jamon Jordan, this guided tour journeys through Detroit’s living history of Black resistance. Explore community spaces, learn about local freedom fighters, and experience how collective power has transformed neighborhoods into sites of liberation.
Day 2 – Joy as Resistance: Black Liberation Party
Saturday, Nov. 1 | 8 PM–Midnight
Mama Imani Humphrey Hall, 8342 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI
Celebrate the spirit of liberation through rhythm and movement. The Joy as Resistance Black Liberation Party reminds us that joy is not just celebration — it’s a political act of survival, unity, and healing.
Day 3 – Honoring Assata Shakur: The Struggles Continue
Sunday, Nov. 2 | 2–6 PM
Alkebu-Lan Village, 7701 Harper Avenue, Detroit, MI
The weekend concludes with food, fellowship, and a powerful panel discussion honoring Assata Shakur and the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice. Community remarks by Dr. Yusef Bunchy Shakur will anchor this closing gathering in reflection, love, and renewed purpose.
