An exciting new Michigan constitutional amendment is being proposed that could change the way we vote in elections. Rank MI Vote wants Michigan to allow a fairer, more sensible option to elect the best candidates. This option is called ranked choice voting.

Edit July 17, 2025: The Rank MI Vote petition has been approved, and signatures are being collected.

What is Ranked Choice Voting?

Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is a way to let multiple people run for office and offer the best ideas, without voters or candidates worrying about “spoilers” or about whether a candidate has the resources to win. Instead of our current system where the candidate with the most votes wins, even if most voters didn’t vote for them (!!!), RCV requires that no candidate can win without a majority of the vote.

RCV makes this possible by allowing voters to vote for more than one candidate. In addition to voting for their top choice, they can also vote for a second choice, a third choice, and so on. In other words, voters rank as many candidates as they want in order of preference. When ballots are being counted, if no candidate gets a majority of votes, the candidate with the least votes is eliminated and voters who voted for them have their next choice counted instead.

RCV is a simple change to the ballot that enables a better voter experience, better campaigns, and ultimately, better government.
