This #BlackAugust<\/a>, we honor the legacy of activist, author, and member of the Black Panther Party member\u2014 George Jackson, who became a powerful symbol of resistance against the oppressive criminal legal system. Arrested at 18 and sentenced to an unjust one year to life in prison, Jackson\u2019s life and writings, particularly his work Soledad Brother, exposed the harsh realities of race, class struggle, and the brutality of the prison system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black August was born out of the <\/a>need to remember and honor the sacrifices of Jackson and other revolutionaries who fought against systemic oppression. His death on August 21, 1971, in San Quentin Prison inspired the creation of Black August as a month dedicated to the memory of Black resistance, liberation, and the ongoing struggle for justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
