{"id":281052,"date":"2026-10-22T20:05:54","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T00:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/?p=281052"},"modified":"2026-10-22T20:05:57","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T00:05:57","slug":"october-24-is-national-life-without-parole-awareness-day-what-does-a-sentence-without-hope-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/es\/2026\/10\/october-24-is-national-life-without-parole-awareness-day-what-does-a-sentence-without-hope-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"October 24 Is National Life Without Parole Awareness Day: What Does a Sentence Without Hope Mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does it mean to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means a person can spend decades in prison, pursue an education, mentor others, take responsibility for their actions, and demonstrate personal growth, but still never have the opportunity to appear before a parole board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life without parole (LWOP) is sometimes called &#8220;death by incarceration&#8221; because there is no opportunity for release through parole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Saturday, October 24, marks the inaugural National Life Without Parole Awareness Day, organized by Drop LWOP New England and a coalition of more than 25 organizations across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign is bringing attention to extreme prison sentences and calling for sentencing policies that recognize accountability, personal transformation, and the possibility of a second look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-does-life-without-parole-really-mean\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does Life Without Parole Really Mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone receives a life without parole sentence, they are not eligible for parole, regardless of how many years they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means even after 20, 30, or 40 years, they cannot ask a parole board to review their progress and consider whether they should be released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The national campaign asks people to consider an important question: Should someone have the opportunity to demonstrate that they&#8217;ve changed, even after committing a serious offense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocates are calling for second-look policies that would allow certain sentences to be reviewed after many years of incarceration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second look does not mean automatic release. It means creating an opportunity to consider a person&#8217;s circumstances, rehabilitation, and record after years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign also recognizes the importance of accountability and the experiences of people who have been harmed by crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"behind-every-sentence-are-people-and-families\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Behind Every Sentence Are People and Families<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life without parole affects more than the person serving the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families may spend decades maintaining relationships with loved ones who have no possibility of parole. People who are incarcerated may continue pursuing education, helping others, and participating in programs, even though their sentence provides no opportunity for release through parole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the experiences National Life Without Parole Awareness Day is bringing into public conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VAAC&#8217;s work centers people impacted by incarceration and systemic exclusion. Understanding how criminal legal policies affect individuals, families, and communities is part of that work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-you-can-participate-on-october-24\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How You Can Participate on October 24<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drop LWOP New England has created several ways for people to participate in National Life Without Parole Awareness Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Help others understand what life without parole means.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Share an educational graphic, record a short video, or post a personal reflection. The campaign has prepared sample language and materials that participants can adapt for social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Share a personal story, if you&#8217;re comfortable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People directly impacted by life without parole, including family members, can share their experiences and help others understand the human impact of these sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Start a conversation in your community.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to use social media to participate.
