{"id":281020,"date":"2026-10-22T20:09:20","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T00:09:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/?p=281020"},"modified":"2026-10-22T20:09:23","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T00:09:23","slug":"michigan-prison-oversight-citizens-for-prison-reform-launches-letter-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/es\/2026\/10\/michigan-prison-oversight-citizens-for-prison-reform-launches-letter-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan Prison Oversight: Citizens for Prison Reform Launches Letter Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Citizens for Prison Reform (CPR) is asking Michigan residents to contact Governor Gretchen Whitmer about two bills that would strengthen oversight of Michigan&#8217;s prison system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2026-HB-5920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bills 5920<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2026-HB-5921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5921<\/a> would expand the authority of Michigan&#8217;s Legislative Corrections Ombudsman, an office responsible for investigating complaints and monitoring conditions within the Michigan Department of Corrections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed changes would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expand the ways people can submit complaints about prison conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthen the Ombudsman&#8217;s ability to investigate concerns and work with outside experts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase transparency through public reporting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthen protections for people who report problems within the prison system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Both bills passed the Michigan House on August 25 and were referred to the Senate Oversight Committee on September 9.<\/strong> They have not yet become law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-citizens-for-prison-reform-is-asking\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Citizens for Prison Reform Is Asking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizens for Prison Reform has launched a letter campaign asking Governor Whitmer to publicly support HB 5920 and HB 5921 and work with lawmakers to advance the legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organization is encouraging Michigan residents to share their experiences and concerns about prison oversight, accountability, and the treatment of incarcerated people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campaign provides an online form that allows Michigan residents to send a letter to the governor in approximately two minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With additional Senate session days approaching, CPR is asking people to share the campaign and make sure the governor hears from Michigan residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/letters\/3b3df3f48ecb9b861c76cc52920f6b4727140ea3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Read Citizens for Prison Reform&#8217;s letter campaign and contact Governor Whitmer<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also share the campaign with family, friends, and community members who want to learn more about the proposed changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aprender m\u00e1s acerca de <a href=\"https:\/\/micpr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ciudadanos por la Reforma Penitenciaria<\/a> and its work with families impacted by incarceration.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Citizens for Prison Reform has launched a letter campaign asking Governor Whitmer to support HB 5920 and HB 5921, two Michigan bills that would expand independent prison oversight, strengthen complaint protections, and improve transparency.
