How can you tell whether your clerk received it? What happens if you decide you’d rather vote in person? And how is your ballot kept secure?

These are some of the questions Michigan elections reporter Hayley Harding of Votebeat addressed in her October 8 newsletter, “How does mail voting even work in Michigan?”

We’re sharing some of the information Michigan voters should know, along with resources to help you check your ballot status and make your voting plan.

Who handles my absentee ballot?

Michigan has procedures for handling absentee ballots from the time they are received by local election officials until they are counted.

If your ballot is delivered through the mail, postal workers handle it during delivery and return. Local election officials and election workers then handle and process the returned ballot.

The process includes checking the signed ballot envelope, recording the ballot’s return, and preparing accepted ballots for tabulation.

Election workers follow procedures designed to protect ballot security and maintain voter privacy. The identifying information on the absentee ballot envelope is separated from the ballot so the voter’s choices remain secret.

How do I know if my clerk received my ballot?

You can check your absentee ballot status online.

Visitar mi.gov/voto and select “Your voter information.”

After entering your information, you can view your absentee ballot details, including whether your local clerk has recorded your ballot as received.

This is a helpful way to confirm that your ballot made it back to your clerk’s office.

I received an absentee ballot, but now I want to vote in person. Can I?

Yes. Receiving an absentee ballot does not mean you have to use it.

If you have your absentee ballot and would rather vote in person, bring it to your assigned early voting site or Election Day polling place and tell the election workers you want to vote in person instead.

Election workers can arrange for your absentee ballot to be surrendered and issue you a new ballot.

If you no longer have your absentee ballot, tell the election workers. They will follow the applicable procedures to verify your ballot status and determine whether a new ballot can be issued.

You cannot cast two ballots in the same election. Election officials use voter records and ballot-processing procedures to prevent more than one ballot from being counted for the same voter.

There is also another option in most Michigan communities: If you already completed your absentee ballot, you may be able to bring it to your assigned early voting site or Election Day polling place and insert it directly into a tabulator after election workers verify that it is the correct ballot.

That option is not available in Detroit.

You can find information about early voting in Michigan through the Michigan Department of State.

Is absentee voting secure?

Michigan uses several procedures to protect absentee ballots.

These include recording when ballots are received, checking signatures on absentee ballot envelopes, maintaining ballot custody records, and following procedures that keep voter information separate from marked ballots.

Election workers also verify ballot status to prevent duplicate voting.

Local clerks are responsible for administering absentee voting in their communities, and election inspectors follow established procedures when processing and counting ballots.

You can learn more about these procedures through In Michigan We Trust, a nonpartisan public education resource about Michigan’s election safeguards.

When should I return my absentee ballot?

For most Michigan voters, completed absentee ballots must reach the local clerk by 8:00 PM on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3.

Promote the Vote recommends that Tuesday, October 20, be the last day most voters return their absentee ballots by mail to reduce the risk of postal delays.

October 20 is a recommended mailing date, not the legal ballot-return deadline.

A partir de 21 de octubre, Promote the Vote recommends returning completed absentee ballots directly to your city or township clerk’s office, a satellite clerk’s office, or a secure ballot drop box in your community.

You can find local drop box and clerk information at mi.gov/voto.

Different ballot-return deadlines apply to eligible military and overseas voters.

Where can I learn more?

For questions about your ballot, registration, polling place, or early voting location, start with mi.gov/voto or contact your city or township clerk.

And for a closer look at the process, read Hayley Harding’s original Votebeat newsletter, “How does mail voting even work in Michigan?”

Reporting credit: This article was developed using reporting by Hayley Harding, Votebeat’s Michigan elections reporter, published October 8, 2026, alongside Michigan Department of State voting guidance and election-deadline information shared with VAAC by Promote the Vote.

Who handles your absentee ballot?
