Michigan\u2019s County Canvass Is Underway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Election Day for Michigan\u2019s August 4 Primary is over, but the work of reviewing and certifying the election results is still underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across Michigan, bipartisan Boards of County Canvassers are conducting the post-election county canvass. This process reviews local election records, checks precinct results for accuracy, corrects clerical or mathematical errors when necessary, and produces the certified results for each county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/resources\/news\/2026\/08\/04\/deputy-secretary-reports-safe-secure-election-day-after-polls-close-across-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The results reported on election night are unofficial. The canvass is the process used to review those results before they become official.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-happens-after-the-polls-close\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens after the polls close?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The canvass begins with work completed at each voting precinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/elections\/admin-info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">After the polls close, election inspectors save the electronic poll book records, produce the statement of votes, and secure ballots and other election materials in sealed containers.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/sos\/Elections\/Ballot-Access\/November-2024-post-election-audit-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Election materials then go through a receiving board, which checks that required materials are properly secured and that the number of voters recorded matches the number of ballots cast.<\/a> The statement of votes and other records are then provided to the Board of County Canvassers for review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These steps create multiple opportunities to identify and correct clerical errors before results are certified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"who-conducts-the-county-canvass\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who conducts the county canvass?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/faqs\/elections-and-campaign-finance\/elections-and-voting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Each of Michigan\u2019s 83 counties has a four-member Board of County Canvassers made up of two Republicans and two Democrats.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The board is responsible for reviewing and certifying election results within the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-does-the-board-of-county-canvassers-review\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does the Board of County Canvassers review?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the canvass, board members review election records from individual precincts, including poll books and statements of votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process includes checking records for completeness and accuracy, correcting obvious mathematical errors, tabulating valid write-in votes, and recording the final number of votes cast for candidates and ballot proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The board then determines the results for the races and ballot questions it is responsible for certifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=mcl-168-822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Under Michigan law, certification is a ministerial, clerical, and nondiscretionary duty.<\/a> The role of the canvassers is to review the election records and certify the results according to the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"when-will-the-county-results-be-certified\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When will the county results be certified?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Laws\/MCL?objectName=MCL-168-821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boards of County Canvassers were required to begin meeting no later than Thursday, August 6<\/a>, following the August 4 Primary Election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/faqs\/elections-and-campaign-finance\/elections-and-voting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They have 14 days after Election Day to complete the canvass and certify their county\u2019s results.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/resources\/news\/2026\/08\/04\/deputy-secretary-reports-safe-secure-election-day-after-polls-close-across-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tuesday, August 18:<\/strong> Deadline for Michigan\u2019s Boards of County Canvassers to complete the county canvass and certify election results.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After county certification is complete, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/elections\/bsc\">Michigan Board of State C<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/elections\/bsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/elections\/bsc\">nvassers<\/a> conducts the state canvass for the races it is responsible for certifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"learn-more-about-observing-the-canvass\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn more about observing the target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The League of Women Voters of Michigan is seeking volunteers from democracy partner organizations for its 2026 Board of Canvassers Observation Program, particularly in areas of the state without a local League presence.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Observers receive training and submit reports after their observation
