Local governments across Michigan continue advancing resolutions opposing documentary proof of citizenship requirements as organizing efforts expand into additional communities statewide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This week, the Inkster City Council, Delta Township Board, and Canton Township Board unanimously passed resolutions opposing the SAVE Act and proposed Michigan ballot initiative efforts that would create additional documentation requirements for voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to organizers, 21 additional local elected officials voted in support of the resolutions opposing efforts they say would strip power away from Michigan voters and silence our voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supporters of the resolutions continue raising concerns that documentary proof of citizenship requirements would create barriers for eligible voters by requiring documents such as passports or birth certificates in order to register to vote.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Advocates and local leaders have pointed to the impact these requirements could have on people who have moved frequently, changed their names, lost records, recently returned home from incarceration, or face housing instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Organizers also noted that local clerks in each community publicly expressed support for the resolutions and spoke strongly about the impact these proposals could have on voters and election administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re able, please take a moment to thank the local leaders and clerks who supported these resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The local resolutions are advancing alongside broader statewide conversations about voting access, election administration, and documentary proof of citizenship requirements in Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the state level, lawmakers recently reintroduced the Michigan Voting Rights Act through Senate Bills 961<\/a>, 962<\/a>, 963<\/a>, y 964<\/a>. .
