Pero no era meramente ornamental. Era funcional. Fue la respuesta a la violencia en las calles, a los cuerpos en los puentes, a los nombres grabados en la memoria porque la naci\u00f3n se neg\u00f3 a permitirles cumplir con el m\u00e1s b\u00e1sico de nuestros deberes c\u00edvicos: votar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El 29 de abril, la Corte Suprema no se limit\u00f3 a reinterpretar esa joya. La profan\u00f3. Y al hacerlo, otorg\u00f3 algo mucho m\u00e1s peligroso a las legislaturas estatales de todo el pa\u00eds: permiso. Permiso para redefinir fronteras con precisi\u00f3n quir\u00fargica. Permiso para silenciar voces sin decirlo abiertamente. Permiso para encubrir la privaci\u00f3n de derechos raciales bajo el lenguaje de los procedimientos. As\u00ed es como se produce la erosi\u00f3n en Estados Unidos. No siempre con un estruendo, sino con un fallo de seis jueces no electos y un encogimiento de hombros.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ya hemos visto esto antes. Nos dicen que esto es progreso. Que el pa\u00eds ha superado su pasado, que ahora vivimos en una sociedad &quot;sin discriminaci\u00f3n racial&quot;. Pero si eso fuera cierto, no habr\u00eda necesidad de desmantelar las protecciones que lo impiden. Las leyes no se eliminan de la nada. Se eliminan porque obstaculizan algo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Y lo que representan es un obst\u00e1culo para quienes est\u00e1n en el poder y desean ejercerlo indiscriminadamente.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La historia de los derechos civiles en este pa\u00eds no es abstracta; es una realidad palpable. Est\u00e1 escrita en las vidas de quienes pagaron con su vida por el derecho al voto. Activistas golpeados en Selma durante el Domingo Sangriento. Voluntarios del Verano de la Libertad asesinados en Misisipi mientras registraban votantes. Personas que nunca vieron los frutos de las libertades que exigieron. Y quienes hoy a\u00fan viven con las cicatrices f\u00edsicas y mentales de la lucha por la libertad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debilitar la Ley de Derecho al Voto no es solo un acto legal. Es una declaraci\u00f3n moral. Sugiere que los sacrificios realizados fueron excesivos. Que las protecciones conquistadas ahora resultan inconvenientes. Que el derramamiento de sangre puede minimizarse porque pertenece a otra \u00e9poca. Pero el pasado no es el pasado. Es el presente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuestiones que se cre\u00edan resueltas ahora se han borrado. Se observa en el progresivo desmantelamiento de los derechos de las mujeres. Se observa en los ataques coordinados contra las iniciativas de diversidad e inclusi\u00f3n, donde los intentos de corregir un desequilibrio hist\u00f3rico se presentan como amenazas. Se observa en la creciente hostilidad hacia los inmigrantes. Derechos que antes parec\u00edan estables ahora se sienten condicionados.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aqu\u00ed se observa un patr\u00f3n. La decisi\u00f3n del Tribunal de derogar la Secci\u00f3n 2 de la Ley de Derechos Electorales, que prohib\u00eda la discriminaci\u00f3n racial en el voto, no fue un hecho aislado. Forma parte de una redefinici\u00f3n m\u00e1s amplia de los derechos en este pa\u00eds, que otorga mayor discrecionalidad a quienes ya ostentan el poder y menor protecci\u00f3n a quienes hist\u00f3ricamente han sido privados de \u00e9l.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lo que hace que este momento sea particularmente peligroso no son solo los cambios de pol\u00edtica, sino la postura que los sustenta. La indiferencia con la que se llevan a cabo. La sensaci\u00f3n de que la historia puede obviarse, de que las luchas de generaciones anteriores son reliquias en lugar de advertencias. La distancia entre entonces y ahora no es tan grande como pretendemos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las im\u00e1genes pueden ser diferentes. El lenguaje puede ser m\u00e1s refinado. Pero las preguntas fundamentales siguen siendo las mismas: \u00bfQui\u00e9n tiene el poder? \u00bfQui\u00e9n es escuchado? \u00bfQui\u00e9n decide el futuro de este pa\u00eds?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quienes se oponen a la Ley de Derecho al Voto dir\u00e1n que nuestro pa\u00eds es diferente y que ya no la necesitamos, pero eliminar la representaci\u00f3n negra donde vive la mayor\u00eda de los afroamericanos no es progreso. Es un retroceso disfrazado. La cuesti\u00f3n ahora no es si este momento importa. Importa. La cuesti\u00f3n es si lo reconoceremos con la suficiente claridad como para responder con la misma convicci\u00f3n que quienes nos precedieron. Ellos comprendieron algo que corremos el riesgo de olvidar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si bien la decisi\u00f3n de la semana pasada fue un duro golpe para quienes luchan por una naci\u00f3n m\u00e1s justa, la moral del universo sigue inclin\u00e1ndose hacia la justicia. Nuestra batalla por una naci\u00f3n que represente al pueblo en su sentido m\u00e1s aut\u00e9ntico no ha terminado ni terminar\u00e1 jam\u00e1s.
