{"id":233309,"date":"2026-04-23T14:37:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/?p=233309"},"modified":"2026-04-23T14:37:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:37:17","slug":"save-act-update-senate-vote-stalls-federal-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/es\/2026\/04\/save-act-update-senate-vote-stalls-federal-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"SAVE Act Update: Senate Vote Stalls Federal Proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been a lot of conflicting information circulating about the SAVE Act, and as of now, there has been little coverage from major news sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on information from the <a href=\"https:\/\/campaignlegal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Campaign Legal Center (CLC)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/campaignlegal.org\/press-releases\/victory-voters-save-america-act-fails-senate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the U.S. Senate has stopped debate<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/22\">Ley SAVE<\/a>. This means the bill has effectively stalled and did not advance in the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a shift from where things stood in February, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/house-passes-new-version-save-act-brennan-center-responds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House of Representatives passed the bill<\/a> and it moved to the Senate for consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-the-save-act-would-do\"><strong>What the SAVE Act would do<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously shared, the SAVE Act would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote or update voter registration. This could include documents such as a passport, certified birth certificate, or naturalization papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These requirements would add new steps to the registration process and could make it harder for eligible voters to register or stay registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"who-could-be-impacted\"><strong>Who could be impacted<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessing these documents can require time, cost, and supporting paperwork. Based on prior analysis and national advocacy reporting, barriers could fall most heavily on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People impacted by incarceration, poverty, or housing instability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People whose documents do not match their current name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>votantes de edad avanzada<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ciudadanos naturalizados<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voters with limited access to transportation or government offices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is already <a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?req=(title:18%20section:611%20edition:prelim)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal<\/a> o <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/elections\/voting\/voters\/only-us-citizens-can-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state elections<\/a>. Proposals like this add additional documentation requirements for people who are already eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-happens-next\"><strong>What happens next<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the Senate stopped debate, the SAVE Act did not move forward at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, similar proposals continue to move forward at the state and local level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En M\u00edchigan, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-HB-4765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB 4765<\/a><\/strong> has already <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2026\/04\/15\/michigan-house-passes-controversial-voter-id-bill-along-party-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed the House and is now in the Senate.<\/a> Like the federal SAVE Act, it would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote and could create barriers for eligible voters across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.lwv.org\/sites\/default\/files\/wayne_resolution_press_release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local governments across Michigan are taking action by passing resolutions opposing these types of requirements.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"take-action\"><strong>Tomar medidas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple ways to engage right now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/senate.michigan.gov\/senators\/all-senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Comun\u00edquese con su senador estatal.<\/a><\/strong> and share how HB 4765 could impact you or your community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Show up to local meetings and public comment opportunities<\/strong> where documentary proof of citizenship policies are being discussed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speak from your experience<\/strong>. Local leaders are hearing directly from community members, and those voices are shaping decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What is happening at the federal level, in Lansing, and in local communities is connected.
