{"id":131860,"date":"2025-02-28T09:17:26","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T14:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/?p=131860"},"modified":"2025-06-03T13:11:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T17:11:01","slug":"urgent-action-call-your-state-representative-to-vote-no-on-hjr-b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/votingaccessforall.org\/es\/2025\/02\/urgent-action-call-your-state-representative-to-vote-no-on-hjr-b\/","title":{"rendered":"Acci\u00f3n urgente: \u00a1Llame a su representante estatal para votar NO en HJR B!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At <strong>Voting Access for All Coalition<\/strong>, we work every day to ensure that returning citizens, formerly incarcerated individuals, and justice-impacted communities have full access to their right to vote. <strong>House Joint Resolution B (HJR B) threatens that right<\/strong> by imposing unnecessary barriers to voter registration\u2014particularly harming the communities we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-hjr-b\"><strong>What is HJR B?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If passed, <strong>HJR B would eliminate the ability to register to vote using only a driver\u2019s license or state-issued ID.<\/strong> Instead, individuals would be required to provide additional <strong>documentary proof of citizenship<\/strong>, such as a passport, naturalization papers, or a certified birth certificate that matches their current legal name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"who-would-be-harmed\"><strong>Who Would Be Harmed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This requirement disproportionately impacts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Formerly incarcerated individuals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women (<strong>especially married women<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seniors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>College students and tribal citizens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rural communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Active-duty military members<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these individuals do not have easy access to these documents due to systemic barriers, lost records, or financial hardship. This unnecessary restriction would disenfranchise thousands of eligible voters, increase election costs, and make the process less efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hjr-b-threatens-voting-access-for-returning-citizens\"><strong>HJR B Threatens Voting Access for Returning Citizens<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now in Michigan, <strong>people with felony convictions automatically regain their right to vote upon release.<\/strong> VAAC has worked tirelessly to educate, register, and engage returning citizens in the democratic process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HJR B undermines that progress<\/strong> by creating a new registration hurdle that disproportionately affects those already marginalized by the legal system. Many returning citizens <strong>do not have immediate access to a passport or birth certificate<\/strong> upon release, and requiring them to obtain these documents before registering to vote is an unfair, unnecessary barrier to full civic participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, <strong>Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson<\/strong> held a press conference to highlight the serious threat <strong>HJR B<\/strong> poses to Michigan\u2019s election system.
